About Yorkshire Sikh Forum

The Yorkshire Sikh Forum has been a cornerstone for Sikh representation in Yorkshire for over 35 years, promoting dialogue, cultural celebration, and interfaith harmony. It continues to play a vital role in community engagement and advocacy.

    Origin and Founding

Founded by Dr Nirmal Singh Sekhon, the Yorkshire Sikh Forum (YSF) was established in 1989 to represent Sikhs in Yorkshire and promote peace and interfaith harmony.

    Under his leadership, YSF has:

    • Built strong links with MPs, police, and other faith groups.
    • Organised major events like Remembrance Sunday, Vaisakhi celebrations, and dinners attended by dignitaries including the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and members of the House of Lords.

Dr Sekhon describes the Forum as “the pride and joy of the Indian community in West Yorkshire,” committed to harmony and dialogue.

    Purpose and Role

The Forum is non-political and non-religious, focusing on representing the Sikh community at local and regional levels.

    Its objectives include:

    • Building interfaith links with other communities.
    • Promoting peace and harmony.
    • Acting as a bridge between Sikhs and UK authorities, especially after being encouraged by the Home Office in its early years.

It has received support from UK leaders, including former ministers and members of the House of Lords.
